Training patients & public as effective lay representatives

Training patients & public as effective lay representatives

Many people attend groups and committees, ostensibly, as lay representatives and are unable to make an effective contribution because they do not understand the bigger picture. Some are there because of personal issues and some are there so they can impress their friends. I am not aware of any, validated, education programmes.

Most patient reps have experience, expertise, good skills and GREAT networks. Anyone who thinks it's about a personal beef soon learns otherwise, and either goes away or changes, in my experience. There has been a Patient Leadership programme, which some people found valuable, but there has been very little explicit use made of the people who completed it.
